Poetry
Over the past several years, Nathan has moved himself as a writer, into new kinds of territories. One of these attempts led him into the world of performance poetry and, since that time, he has showcased his work at venues such as the Firefly Coffee House and Four Cups Cafe.

Poet’s Reading
As the Last Train Rolls By
Oh green! Green! Green!
Green of the Irish!
Green of the billiard table!
It fills the room as the
bearded strummer strums
and the accordion player plays
and the listeners sit and listen
and drink their drinks both
rich and dark and
clear and strong.
I sip and listen
and sip and listen
and listen and sip.
Thinking about her
and about them
and about myself
and what I am
and who I was
and where I’ve been
and will never be again.
And I think and drink
and drink and drink
and call for another
as talk both
dull and inspired
sweep around and around and mix with
acoustic chords played and transform into a
dull roar in my skull
amongst my thoughts
and my neurosis.
Laughter and clapping
and another tune begins as I
watch the barflies buzz
and the young couples fall in love
and the old souls smoke out front while
the gay men sit in the corner
and the malnourished scholars discuss
Nietzsche and ethics and
anger and growth
but derive no answers from their hypotheses
These people know me
and I them though we’ve never spoke.
And I am content that
this night has come
and will never come again
as the room begins to shake
and I hold my glass
and think and listen and drink
and watch the window as the last train rolls by
and the music plays on.
